In recent years, the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses have been on the rise, with a staggering 1 in 36 individuals diagnosed with autism. This neurological condition affects people’s communication, behavior and social interactions, leading to a diverse range of abilities and challenges. However, amidst these challenges, there are opportunities for positive change, particularly in the realm of employment and community support.
The statistics paint a poignant picture – 90% of autistic adults find themselves underemployed, representing the largest unemployed demographic in the United States. These numbers highlight the pressing need for tailored support and programs that can empower individuals with autism to unlock their potential and secure meaningful employment. And that’s where organizations like TACT (Teaching the Autism Community Trades) step in.
A Growing Need
Colorado, like many other states, has been grappling with the difficulties in funding and supporting autism-related initiatives. In fact, ten of the largest autism groups in Colorado have left due to financial and funding challenges. The need, however, has not gone away. Luckily, amidst these challenges, a beacon of hope shines through – TACT. You can read more about TACT’s impact in the local Denver community here.
Today TACT, or Teaching the Autism Community Trades, is supporting children and young adults with autism through education and employment in the skilled trades. The local nonprofit helps build jobs and bright futures for the full spectrum of individuals with autism.
“We’re creating genuine pathways to make opportunities for our kids. The coolest part is the community that it’s built, because people are recognizing these kids are incredible and bring so much value to the organization. It feels like it’s breaking down a stereotype of what people think is possible.” – TACT Founder and CEO, Danny Combs
Untapped potential
TACT offers a variety of programs for those with autism, from camps for young children to workshops with introductory lessons, all focused on hands-on skills like welding, auto mechanics, carpentry and even guitar making. Whatever the lesson, it’s always paired with encouragement and empowerment along the way, helping students gain confidence in addition to their new skill. The nonprofit’s career track program helps participants turn their talents into trades through specialized training and job placements. TACT boasts an 83% placement rate for students. TACT is making waves by collaborating with over 50 businesses and serving hundreds of clients throughout the Denver area.
One of the key factors that contribute to TACT’s success is its commitment to inclusivity. The organization serves the entire autism spectrum, embracing the diversity within this community. This approach ensures that the program is authentic, holistic, and complete, addressing the varied needs and potential of individuals across the spectrum. This approach sets the stage for empowerment, personal growth, and genuine integration into the workforce.
Accessibility at the forefront
Another remarkable aspect of TACT’s initiative is its dedication to making its programs accessible to individuals from all socio-economic backgrounds. An impressive 98.5% of TACT’s career-track clients are on some form of scholarship, ensuring that financial barriers don’t hinder progress. This commitment to inclusivity ensures that the pathway to meaningful employment is open to everyone, regardless of their financial circumstances.
A critical element of TACT’s success story lies in the generous support of partners. We are proud to partner with TACT through our Charity of the Month program and highlight its innovative mission that proves every day the power of when we come together to be active forces for good in our communities.
